Structures in the city of Gaza turn to rubbles following retaliatory airstrikes from Israel which started on Saturday |
Without electricity, hospitals in the city of Gaza are at risk of turning into morgues, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says.
The only power plant of Gaza ran out of fuel on Wednesday, and back-up generators could stop functioning in hours, it further said.
Medical centers are finding it difficult to function at full capacity following a complete siege imposed by Israel on Gaza.
Israel has been bombarding Gaza with both air and artillery strikes following a surprise attack launched on Israel by Palestinian fighters known as Hamas in the early hours of Saturday 7 October, 2023.
Israel has said it would not allow restoration of electricity or basic resources to Gaza until Hamas frees around one hundred and fifty (150) hostages it captured during its attacks in the morning of Saturday.
ICRC’s director for the region, Fabrizio Carboni, said: “As Gaza loses power, hospitals lose power, putting newborns in incubators and elderly patients on oxygen at risk. Kidney dialysis stops, and X-rays can’t be taken.
“Without electricity, hospitals risk turning into morgues.”
Carboni further said, hospitals were still running on generators – but fuel would only last “for a few hours”.
