Ramaphosa congratulate Canada on World Cup 2026 progress, says he is ‘proud’ of South Africa

Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, has extended his congratulatory greetings to Canada for their advancement in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a slim victory over the Bafana Bafana.

Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 on Sunday 28 June, 2026 in Los Angeles, US to reach the round of 16 of the tournament.

Taking to X, the South African President congratulated Canada for clinching their position in the last 16 with South Africa “breathing down your necks”.

Ramaphosa wrote: “Well done, @TeamCanada, on proceeding to the Round of 16 in the #FIFAWorldCup, with @BafanaBafana breathing down your necks.”

He hailed the Bafana Bafana, saying, he is “justifiably proud” of South Africa for making it through to the round of 32 of the tournament; also, he commended Coach Hugo Broos for his “transformative leadership”.

Ramaphosa wrote: “We remain justifiably proud of Bafana Bafana’s historic advancement to the last 32 of the world’s best under the transformative leadership of coach Hugo Broos.”

Canada reached the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time with the slim win over the South Africans in California.

Ramaphosa prayed well wishes for Canada as they progress as co-hosts in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

He further wrote: “But, well done again, Canada, and we wish you well on the pitch and as co-hosts for the remainder of this thrilling competition.”

Jesse Marsch’s Reds will now prepare for a round of 16 clash against the winner between Netherlands and Morocco in Houston, US.
