Spanish La Liga Club, FC Barcelona, have sent its “deepest” condolences to Argentine forward, Lionel Messi, on the passing of his Father, Jorge Messi, via X.
Jorge Messi passed at the age of sixty-eight (68) after suffering a long illness.
He passed in a hospital in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Jorge has been his son’s manager since he was fourteen (14); following speculation about his health during the FIFA World Cup 2026, a statement from the Messi family disclosed, he was dealing with a “health-related situation” but did not disclose the nature of his condition.
In its tribute, FC Barcelona wrote: “The President and the Board of Directors of FC Barcelona express their deepest condolences on the passing of Jorge Messi, father of former Barca player and legend Lionel Messi, and, on behalf of the entire Barca family, extend their condolences to the Messi family.”
Jorge was very pivotal in his son, Messi, emerging one of the best players of all time; he was in Qatar to see the forward help Argentina win the FIFA World Cup 2022, their third title.
Also, 39-year old Messi became an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and won the Champions League four times with Barcelona, encompassing ten (10) La Liga titles in seventeen (17) seasons in their first team.
FC Barcelona further wrote: “FC Barcelona thanks Jorge Messi for his commitment to our Club, for entrusting us with the beginnings and the most glorious years of his so Leo’s football career.
“May he rest in peace.”
The Messi family relocated to Spain in February, 2001 after the forward (Lionel) was signed by Barcelona at the age of thirteen (13); Messi’s mother alongside three (3) siblings moved back to Rosario, his father stayed with him in Barcelona.
