Ramaphosa and Carney reflect on World Cup knockout match between South Africa and Canada

President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, “reflected” on the match between South Africa and Canada on Sunday night.

The South African President made known on X, some hours to the showdown between the two (2) countries, he had a conversation with the Canadian PM as both Leaders discussed bolstering “bilateral ties and trade relations” for the two (2) countries.

South Africa and Canada will slug it out in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match on Sunday 28 June, 2026 at Los Angeles Stadium, Inglewood, California, United States (US) at 20:00 (WAT).

President Ramaphosa posted: “On the eve of a seminal FIFA World Cup last 32 knockout match between South Africa and Canada, I spoke to Prime Minister Mark Carney about strengthening bilateral ties and trade relations between our respective countries.

“We also reflected on the imminent football clash between our two nations in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“We committed to forging closer ties whilst remaining firm on our preferred game outcome ahead of the football match.”

South Africa qualified for the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after finishing Group A on the second spot with four (4) points, behind Mexico, who finished with nine (9) points, while, Canada qualified from Group B after concluding with four (4) points also, behind Switzerland, who finished atop with seven (7) points.

President Ramaphosa further posted: “We both wished our two national teams well and undertook to speak again after the match.”
