2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has called on the Nigerian government to focus on “action” and move from “excuses” as well as, from “failure” to “measurable progress”.
Obi’s call is coming following the recently released Global Terrorism Index Report which ranks Nigeria “among the most terrorized nations in the world”; the report also shows, Nigeria has “one of the highest increases in deaths from terrorism”.
Taking to X, Obi described the “worrisome terrorism status” of the country as “a painful indictment of failed leadership”.
The former Governor of Anambra State said: “While many countries are seeing a decline in terrorism, Nigeria is moving in the opposite direction.
“This trend is a direct result of misplaced priorities, weak governance, corruption, a lack of rule of law, and the persistent neglect of security, which is the government’s most fundamental duty.”
Obi listed “insurgency of Boko Haram,
“growing threat posed by the Islamic State West Africa Province,
“the crisis of kidnapping,
“unchecked violence in our rural communities by heavily armed bandits” as serious security issues challenging the country.
He said, “Nigerians are dying daily while those in power continue to feast.”
Obi asked, “what is the purpose of government?” if the protection of lives is not guaranteed. He further asked, “Why are we normalizing tragedy while other nations make progress?”
He said, Nigerians should not accept this as the country “cannot continue down this path”; the ADC member added, Nigeria has reached the “time to move from excuses to action, and from failure to measurable progress”.
Obi concluded, “a safe and secure Nigeria is not too much to ask; it is the right of every citizen, and it must be delivered.”
