President of Turkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, welcomed President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in Ankara, where both Leaders reaffirmed their shared ambition to create a “clear pathway” that will lead to a “five-billion-dollar trade volume between Nigeria and Türkiye”.
Tinubu and Erdogan engaged in “practical and forward-looking” conversations that focused on “trade and investment, peace and security”, as well as, the establishment of Joint Economy and Trade Committee to open “new flows of capital and deepen Turkish investment in Nigeria”.
President Tinubu posted on X: “During the State Visit today in Ankara, Türkiye, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and I reaffirmed our shared ambition, which speaks directly to jobs, investment, and opportunity for our people, creating a clear pathway to a five-billion-dollar trade volume between Nigeria and Türkiye.
“Our conversations were practical and forward-looking: trade and investment, energy, education, defence cooperation, peace and security, and the creation of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee to unlock new flows of capital and deepen Turkish investment in Nigeria.”
The Turkish President hailed President Tinubu for Nigeria’s reforms, especially in the area of energy as the Nigerian Leader assured of Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring “peace and stability” in Africa.
As both sides discussed about security, Erdogan expressed Turkiye’s “readiness” to collaborate with Nigeria in “military training and counter-terrorism efforts”.
President Tinubu said: “I welcome President Erdoğan’s recognition of Nigeria’s reform momentum, particularly in the energy sector, and his confidence in our determination to build an economy that works for everyone, including the most vulnerable.
“We also spoke frankly about security. Nigeria will continue to play its role in peace and stability in Africa. Türkiye’s experience and readiness to cooperate in military training, intelligence sharing, and counter-terrorism efforts strengthen our collective resolve against agents of destabilisation in the Sahel and beyond.”
Turkiye and Nigeria exchanged “nine” agreements in the sectors of “defence, education, trade”. Tinubu made known, Nigeria is fully ready for “serious” business; he added, the country allows trade “without barriers”
President Tinubu said: “At the conclusion of our meetings, nine agreements were exchanged across defence, education, media, diaspora policy, trade, social development, and institutional cooperation between our foreign ministries.
“Nigeria remains open for serious partnership. Open to trade without barriers. Open to ideas, skills, and investment that create value and shared prosperity.”
President Tinubu said, his government is building an “inclusive economy”. He said: “We are building an inclusive economy. We are strengthening peace. Nigeria will continue to engage the world with confidence and clarity.”
President Erdogan described Nigeria as a nation of “strategic importance” with which Turkiye keeps “close” connection on a lot of “issues” that concern the Islamic world.
Erdogan wrote on X: “Nigeria is a country of strategic importance with which we maintain close cooperation on many issues concerning the Islamic world, especially Palestine, within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the D-8.”
