Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian authorities to work harder to tackle the “horrifying and increasing” threat to right to life in parts of the country.
The Human Rights Organization said, “at least 65 people have been killed in horrific attacks this week alone.”
In Katsina State, gunmen murdered “over 50” people, and in Plateau State, “over 15” farmers were killed by gunmen in Mangu Local Government Area (LGA).
Via X, Amnesty International Nigeria reacted: “NIGERIA: The End of Yet Another Bloody Week
“1. The Nigerian authorities must do more to address the horrifying and increasing threat to right to life in some parts of the country.
“2. This week alone, at least 65 people have been killed in horrific attacks. In Katsina state, in an attack on worshippers in a mosque, gunmen killed over 50 people and abducted over 60 people. In Plateau state, over 15 farmers were slaugheted by gunmen in Mangu LGA. As a result, over 200 people were displaced.
“3. Alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom and frequent killings across Nigeria have left people feeling more unsafe, showing utter failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect lives and properties.
“4. Incessant killings and the stunning failure of the authorities to end them and bring suspected perpetrators to justice have been and continues to be a threat to the right to life in Nigeria.
“5. People do not deserve to be left at the mercy of rampaging gunmen. No one deserves to live constantly bracing up for next attack or abduction.
” 6. The Nigerian authorities are obliged under international human rights law, regional human rights treaties, and Nigeria’s own constitution to protect the human rights of all people without discrimination — and that includes the right to life.”
