Peter Obi has called for “urgent support and lasting solutions” for traders who lost their shops and means of livelihood to the Kano Farm Centre GSM Market fire, a recent unfortunate incident.
The former Governor of Anambra State said, the growth of Nigeria’s economy “rests heavily on the strength of small and medium businesses.”
Obi visited the Kano Market on Wednesday after visiting and expressing his condolences to the Dantata and Maitama Sule families in Kano.
The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) who joined congregants at the Triumph Juma’at Mosque for prayers, as well as, fulfil his pledge of assisting the mosque in its renovation, said, “our places of worship are vital pillars in our communities to build unity”.
Obi “deeply appreciated” the Executive Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who visited the Kano Market firsthand following the fire incident and made known his commitment to help in the rebuilding of the Market.
Taking to his official X account, Obi said: “In Kano after visiting and condoling the Dantata, and Maitama Sule (Dan Masanin Kano) families, I joined the congregants at the Triumph Juma’at Mosque for prayers and redeem my token pledge to support the mosque renovation.
“Our places of worship are vital pillars in our communities to build unity, and we should endeavour to support them.
“I then proceeded to the Kano Farm Centre GSM Market, where a recent fire incident destroyed several shops and means of livelihood.
“I deeply appreciate the Governor of Kano State for personally visiting the scene and for his commitment to rebuilding the market. His show of compassion and support for the affected SMEs is very commendable.
“I spoke with some of the affected traders and I share in their pain. What they need now is urgent support and lasting solutions. The growth of our economy rests heavily on the strength of small and medium businesses.
“May we all continue to stand with one another and build a country where leadership is present, especially when the people need it most.
“A new Nigeria is POssible.”
