‘Remain focused’ – South African govt to Bafana Bafana after loss in World Cup opener

Despite losing 2-0 in the World Cup opener against Mexico, the government of South Africa has come out to commend the Bafana Bafana for their “determination and sense of pride” in the showdown on Thursday night in Mexico City, Mexico.

The game recorded a whopping three (3) red cards; a scenario that has never been witnessed in a tournament opening game.

Via X, the SA government described the performance by the Bafana Bafana as “spirited”, however, said, the score was not “what the nation had hoped for”.

In its post-match reaction via a statement, titled ‘Governemnt encourages Bafana Bafana to press on’, the South African Government said: “Government commends Bafana Bafana for their spirited performance in their opening match against Mexico in the FIFA World Cup.

“While the final score was not what the nation had hoped for, the team represented South Africa with unity, determination, and a sense of pride on the world’s biggest stage.”

The SA govt urged the team and coaches to “remain focused” as they gather momentum for their remaining Group A games.

It also called on the people of South Africa to support the Bafana Bafana and “cheer them on” as they represent the country at the global football tournament.

The Statement continues: “We encourage the team, coaching staff and support team to remain focussed and confident as the prepare for the remaining matches in the group stage.

“Together, we can inspire our team to greater heights; South Africans are urged to rally behind our boys and cheer them on as they carry the hope of the nation.

“Wear your green and gold on Bafana Fridays and continue to stand united behind our national team throughout their FIFA World Cup journey.”

It expressed its belief in Bafana Bafana’s ability to “bounce back stronger”.

The Statement further reads: “South Africa remains proud of Bafana Bafana and believes in their ability to bounce back stronger.”
