FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup 2026: Nigeria breeze through England 3-0 to reach quarter finals

The FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign of England Women’s Team Under-20 has come to an end after losing by zero (0) goal to three (3) to the Falconets of Nigeria in the Round of 16 on Thursday 17 September, 2026.

Nigeria went in front through Tosin Rafiu’s early opener in the 7th minute, and just two (2) minutes after the game resumed from break, Janet Akekoromowei struck the back of the net to make it two (2) for the West Africans.

And, in the 72nd minute, Mary Mamudu sealed the triumph for the Falconets in Bielsko-Biala, Poland.

The Young Lionesses of England had ample attacking opportunities, particularly in the first 45 minutes. The Europeans also clinched a chance to level, but, Rachel Maltby missed a penalty, which was tipped onto the bar by Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.

The Nigeria goalie made series of critical saves while her attacking teammates were stunning at the other end.

The outcome in Poland means England exit the competition, while, Nigeria progress to the quarter finals to face Colombia, who defeated Poland by a lone goal on Thursday.

England fought for a way back into the showdown, but, Nigeria stood firm and continued to threaten on the counter. The Young Lionesses responded with heightened attacking pressure and Lola Brown saw her effort saved by Uzoma.

Next for Nigeria?

The Falconets of Nigeria will now face Colombia in the quarter finals on Sunday 20 September, 2026 at 14:00 (WAT).
