Manchester United clinched a vibrant 3-2 comeback victory over AS Roma on Tuesday 3 November, 2026 in the Uefa Champions League 2026/27 League Phase match at Old Trafford, thanks to a brace from Matheus Cunha.
The outcome means Michael Carrick’s Reds have put an end to their nine-match unbeaten run.
It was a jaw-dropping comeback as the home side charged from two (2) goals down to emerge victorious right inside the Theatre of Dreams.
English manager, Carrick, was looking dejected when his side were down following two (2) goals in the first half that came within a time period of seven (7) minutes, however, Cunha’s double brought maximum points and the Brazil international was sent off.
The Brazilian forward was shown his second yellow card and sent off in additional time, but, it made no negative impact on the hosts as the Reds held on.
Roma, Italian Serie A side, went in front through Matias Soule in the 11th minute, and following a check by Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Donyell Malen doubled the lead for the visitors in the 18th minute from the penalty spot.
In the second half, United fought back and found their first goal in the 58th minute through Portugal midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, from the penalty spot.
The Reds had suffered boos at the break and when Carlos Baleba had to leave the midfield early in the second half with a hamstring injury, the situation looked hopeless for Manchester United.
However, hope got restored after Cunha won a penalty which Fernandes made sure to convert for the Reds.
The chants inside the Old Trafford heightened when Cameroonian forward, Bryan Mbeumo, struck both posts with one strike. Pressure from the hosts forced the Serie A side to start to wobble unsteadily.
And, in just a space of three (3) minutes, 83rd and 86th minutes, Cunha, recorded his brace for Manchester United with assists from Fernandes and 19-year old Shea Lacey.
After his double, Cunha was sent off for a frivolous foul, but, United held on and carted their first victory in more than fifty (50) days.
Post-victory comments from Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, said, he alongside his teammates and everyone at the Club have been “frustrated” due to the team’s winless situation.
The Portuguese told Amazon Prime: “Fans want to win games. For them it’s been so frustrating to see the club in this situation.
“I just want to make everyone aware that we’re all frustrated with the situation at the moment and we all want to get out of this. Hopefully this win today gives the start of something good for us.”
Also, Fernandes talked about being sidelined by head coach, Michael Carrick, saying, there has been a lot of “speculation and lies” about what really happened.
He said: “It has been tough, there’s been a lot of speculation in the media, a lot of lies around many things that have happened in this club. Between me and the manager, that we had cleared the air, then after, nothing of that happened.
“The manager took a decision of putting myself on the bench [against Bournemouth] because I wasn’t performing at that level. Everyone felt that that was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right.”
The midfielder, who moved to Old Trafford from Sporting CP in 2020, made known, he was fine with Carrick’s decision to put him on the bench while he explored other options; he said, it does not change his “aim” to emerge victorious in all games.
Fernandes said:”The manager is the one that makes the decisions. I have to accept them, I have to go forward with that. It doesn’t change the belief I have in the manager, in the staff and every player that is in this club.
“It doesn’t change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me. It should be [a turning point].”
