The 100% kick off to the 2026/27 season of Arsenal has abruptly come to and end after the defending champions suffered an embarrassing 0-3 loss to an impressive Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday 19 September, 2026 at American Express (AMEX) Stadium in Brighton and Hove.
The visitors headed into the contest eyeing their eighth consecutive triumph to start their campaign, however, bagged a humiliating thump on the road from Fabian Hurzeler’s brutal team.
The Seagulls wasted no time to mount pressure on Mikel Arteta’s Gunners as strikes from long range from Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas in the 31st and 45th minutes respectively placed Brighton two (2) goals in front.
The strike from Kostoulas came just few seconds after winger, Bukayo Saka, saw a close-range effort which would have been a leveller perfectly saved by Dutch goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen.
The game continued to go the way of Brighton after the break as the hosts netted their third of the afternoon as Chema Andres via a header converted a cross from Gross.
A poor marking from the Gunners made way for Andres’ goal. The home side could have added more goals as their London visitors hardly launched any serious threat; the Gunners found it difficult to forge a way out of their own half.
Despite leading with a wide margin, Brighton did not stop to search for more goals as a header from Pascal Struijk went wide from a corner, and, Matt O’Riley watched his one-on-one effort saved by goalkeeper, David Raya.
The outcome means Arsenal drop to second with twelve (12) points after five (5) games, now trailing Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City, who also have amassed same points, however, have a game unplayed, while, outstanding Brighton climbed up to third with ten (10) points after five (5) games.
Next for Brighton and Arsenal?
Brighton and Arsenal will face Sunderland and Leeds United in the Premier League 2026/27 games at Stadium of Light and Emirates Stadium respectively. Both showdowns will take place on Saturday 10 October, 2026 at 15:00 (WAT) and 12:30 (WAT) respectively.
Manchester City will be looking to go three (3) points ahead of Arsenal when they lock horns with Sunderland in the top flight match on Sunday 20 September, 2026 at Etihad Stadium at 14:00 (WAT).
