2027 Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said, people who served as Governors, Minister and other public officials were not able to “build or strengthen” a single University they were “comfortable enough to send their own children to”.
The Human Rights Activist said, these people expect Nigerians to rejoice over student loans, with families suffering due to “economic hardship”.
Sowore said: “These are the same people who have served as governors, ministers of education, senators, and other top public officials, yet they never built or strengthened a single university they were proud or comfortable enough to send their own children to.
“Instead, they ask ordinary Nigerians to celebrate student loans while millions of families are already overburdened by economic hardship.”
He said, public officials like, “Wike, Soludo” did not “take out” student loans to get their children to Universities in the United Kingdom (UK), adding, their children went to the “best” Universities overseas, while, “neglecting” Universities in Nigeria.
Sowore said: “Ask yourself: did Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT, Nyesom Wike @GovWike, Charles Soludo @CCSoludo , David Umahi @DaveUmahi, and others take out student loans to send their children to universities in the United Kingdom? The answer is no.
“Their children attended some of the best universities abroad, while public universities at home were neglected.”
He said, the “political elite” are using resources meant for the public to “transform” education for millions of Nigerians to finance their “lifestyles and privileges”.
“The public resources that should have transformed education for millions of Nigerians instead financed the lifestyles and privileges of a political elite”, Sowore said.
He concluded, for Nigeria to move forward, there is the need for “leadership committed to investing in the education and future of all Nigerians”.
