In his environmental update to Lagosians, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Executive Governor of Lagos State, announced, he has directed a “scale-up of waste evacuation” across the State with immediate effect.
He gave the directive following “recent built-up” of refuse in some areas of the Southwestern State.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “I have directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation across Lagos following the recent build-up of refuse in some parts of our state.”
He made known, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), alongside the State’s Ministry of Environment, have swung into action, adding, the government has deployed more trucks, as well as, personnel to “clear the backlogs” in all affected areas.
Sanwo-Olu said, these Agencies will continue to work until Lagos State is “completely clean again”; he further said, the State “generates over 13,000 tons of waste every single day”.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “LAWMA, LASEPA, and the Ministry of Environment are currently working around the clock. We have deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear the backlogs across all affected neighbourhoods. You should already see progress on the streets and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again.
“Lagos generates over 13,000 tons of waste every single day.”
The Governor lamented, it requires “massive effort” to manage this amount of waste, and pleaded for “partnership” from Lagosians by ensuring wastes are properly bagged.
Also, he urged Lagosians to not dump refuse on the roads or drainage channels.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “Managing this requires a massive effort but our determination to fix the current challenge is absolute.
“As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads. We are fully on top of this situation.”
