Tottemham Hotspur has expressed its disgust via a statement on the racist abuse its Austrian defender, Kevin Danso, suffered during the Premier League match against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Totteham and Brighton finished 2-2 in the Premier League match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 18 April, 2026.
Since Saturday’s fixture, Danso has continued to suffer what the club termed as “significant and abhorrent racist abuse” on social media.
The Club said, the abuse is definitely a “criminal offence” and will not be “tolerated”, adding, Tottenham is taking immediate action against the issue.
Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently stuck in the Premier League relegation zone following poor performance in their campaign, made known via its official website, it is reporting all “identified content” to the Metropolitan Police and relevant social media platforms.
The Club statement reads: “Since yesterday’s fixture against Brighton, which took place during the Premier League’s No Room For Racism weekend, Kevin Danso has been, and continues to be, subject to significant and abhorrent racist abuse on social media.
“We have heard and seen vile, dehumanising racism. Behaviour that is without doubt a criminal offence. It will not be tolerated.
“The club is taking immediate action. We are reporting all identified content to the Metropolitan Police and to the appropriate authorities in the country where perpetrators reside, as well as to relevant social media platforms. We will push for the strongest possible action against each and every person we identify.”
The Spurs assured the Austria National Team defender of “complete and unconditional support as a player and as a person”, and further assured, “no one at this club will ever stand alone in the face of this”.
Tottenham said, criticizing performance is highly allowed, however, racism is unacceptable. It also said, those who abuse racially could suffer “football banning orders, fines”, and that, it has successfully secured criminal convictions that concern abuse of its staff and players.
The Club stated: “Criticism of performances is part of the game. Racism is not.
“Abusers could face custodial sentences, football banning orders, criminal records, fines, community orders or police-mandated educational programmes.
“We have successfully secured criminal convictions following abuse of our staff and players, including individuals based overseas, and we have also issued indefinite Club bans.”
It requested social media platforms – X, Instagram and more – to join the fight and ensure abusers are “decisively” dealt with
Tottenham further stated: “We call on X, Instagram and all platforms to act quickly and decisively when racist abuse is reported.”
