‘Thank you for giving me the chance’ – Mbappe pens tribute to Deschamps on ‘last dance’

Kylian Mbappe has expressed his gratitude to head coach, Didier Deschamps, who will draw the curtain with the Les Bleus after the World Cup match against England on Saturday night.

The Real Madrid forward thanked the former France midfielder for giving him the “chance and opportunity” to feature for the Les Bleus on the “biggest stage for many years”.

After fourteen (14) years, Deschamps will have his “last dance” as France manager in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third place match against England on Saturday 18 July, 2026 in Miami, US at 22:00 (WAT).

Taking to X, Mbappe wrote, Deschamps has given the Les Bleus “so much” and deserves a “better ending”.

France were unable to reach the final of the tournament after falling to a more organized Spain 0-2 in the semi finals on Tuesday in Dallas.

In his tribute, Mbappe wrote: “Today is your last dance.

“You who gave us so much. We should have offered you a better ending, but we failed. Putting words to what you brought over 14 years is very difficult, so major an actor were you in the revival of this team.

“People haven’t always known how to appreciate your greatness, but time and history will take care of that…”

The former Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG) forward said, he feels “privileged” to work under Deschamps, adding, he only holds the “excellent memories” of what they both achieved together.

Mbappe wrote: “Thank you for giving me the chance and opportunity to represent my country on the biggest stage for so many years. I feel privileged to have been able to stand alongside one of the greatest legends of our country, and I hold only excellent memories of everything we lived through and accomplished together.”

The former AS Monaco player failed to help France scale through Spain as goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro proved enough for the La Roja, who will be fighting for the World Cup trophy against Lionel Messi’s Argentina come Sunday.

Mbappe further wrote: “I wish you the best in your new adventure, and thank you again for everything you brought to this jersey that means so much to us.”
