England 1-2 Argentina: Messi the catalyst in White and Sky Blue late comeback win

Lionel Messi’s heroics helped Argentina come from behind to win 2-1 against England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi final match on Wednesday 15 July, 2026 at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, United States (US).

The Inter Miami forward’s assists resulted in the leveller and winner for the White and Sky Blue as they seal their place in the final to play against Spain in New York.

It was a jaw-dropping fightback from Argentina which shattered the hearts of Thomas Tuchel’s England; with this outcome, the South Americans are in their second successive World Cup final after winning the 2022 Edition in Qatar.

After a goalless first half, Barcelona new addition, Anthony Gordon, placed the Three Lions in front in the 55th minute with an assist from Aston Villa attacking midfielder, Morgan Rogers.

Gordon’s goal left Argentina trailing deep into the second half, but, the reigning Kings fought back and wriggled themselves back from the brink.

In the 85th minute, Chelsea midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, levelled for the White and Sky Blue with an assist from Messi; and in the 2nd minute of additional time, Messi once again was the provider as he released for Lautaro Martinez, who found the winner to seal another crucial victory.

Argentina will face Spain in the final of the tournament on Sunday 19 July, 2026 at New York New Jersey Stadium, East Rutherford, NY, US at 20:00 (WAT).

The result leaves the Three Lions “completely heartbroken” as it puts their World Cup “dream” to an “end”.

On X, the England Men’s Senior National Team expressed gratitude to fans for their “support” in North America and at home.

Reacting to the loss, England wrote: “We are completely heartbroken that our dream ends here, but so proud of this group, our staff and you – our amazing fans

“Your support in North America and back home has been nothing short of incredible. Thank you.”
