Lagos State: Govt urge filling stations, banks to join in fight against open defecation

The government of Lagos State has said, it currently has “1,710” public toilets that are functional, as well as, “strategically” installed all over the State for residents and visitors.

The govt made this known through Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State.

Wahab said, the public toilets are a part of the government’s efforts to get rid of open defecation across the State and “improve public sanitation”.

However, the Commissioner said, the government cannot win the fight against open defecation alone as he called on filling stations, banks to support by making available restrooms to the public “where possible”.

Via X, Wahab said: “Government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible.

He added: “This collaborative approach will significantly complement government efforts and expand access to sanitation facilities across the state.”

He warned, anyone caught engaging in open defecation will be “arrested and prosecuted” according to the law. These “measures” will ensure a “cleaner environment” for everyone.

Wahab cautioned: “At the same time, we continue to enforce environmental sanitation laws. Individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

He said: “These measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment for all.
