The British High Commission has disclosed it is “working very closely” with Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to ensure that the 2023 elections are “free, fair and credible”.

The British High Commission, Political Counsellor in Nigeria, Jonathan Bacon, made this known on Monday evening while speaking to journalists after having a closed door meeting with the Rivers State Governor, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, in Rumueiprikom, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, the Governor’s country home.
Bacon, in company of other officials, said, the meeting with the Rivers State Governor was productive, also revealed the British government is constantly monitoring the situation in Nigeria as the 2023 elections draw very nigh.
Bacon said: “We discussed the electoral period looking ahead to 2023 and I reiterated the British government’s position that we are supporting the process”
“We are also working very closely with INEC and we’re hoping for a free, fair and credible election in 2023.
“The British High Commission Team from Abuja has come to River State today for a number of meetings. We had a meeting just now with His Excellency, the Governor of River State. We discussed how we could further strengthen cooperation between the UK and Nigeria and the UK Rivers State.”
