Indonesia Storage Depot Fire: At least 18 lives lost, more than 1,000 rendered homeless

Pertamina, an Indonesian State Energy Firm, has apologized for a fire at a Jakarta Fuel storage depot as residents searched through the ruins of their burnt homes.

The fire incident which happened on Friday claimed at least 18 lives including two children, Pertamina disclosed.

According to the Police, several persons sustained injuries and some people were still missing after the unfortunate incident.

A huge part of Indonesia’s fuel and energy distribution is controlled by Pertamina. The firm has publicly tendered an apology for the mishap as more than 1,000 residents living around the area of the depot had to be evacuated.

Via a news conference, Director Nicke Widyawati, said: “The management and I would like to convey our deepest apology for this incident. None of us expected this incident to happen.”

A witness disclosed to AFP, “What I saw was smoke travelling from the left to the right, about 10 minutes later there was an explosion and the fire spread catching the houses.”

On Saturday, officials called for an audit of “all fuel facilities and infrastructures” in Indonesia.
