Boat Mishap: 16 dead including children off Djibouti – IOM-UN

At least, sixteen (16) people have lost their lives, and twenty-eight (28) others missing after a boat loaded with asylum seekers capsized off the coast of Djibouti, according to the United Nations (UN) Migration agency.

The accident happened on the night of Monday 22 April, 2024, about two weeks after another boat loaded with mainly Ethiopian asylum seekers sank off the coast of the Horn of Africa nation, Djibouti, killing several dozen people on the dangerous “eastern migration route” from Africa to the Middle East.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM): “Tragedy as boat capsizes off #Djibouti coast with 77 migrants on board including children. At least 28 missing. 16 dead. @DjiboutiIOM supporting local authorities with search and rescue effort.”
