The Frenchman is the world record holder in the long course 400 metres individual medley, also the Olympic record holder in the 200 metres butterfly, the 200 metres breaststroke and the 200 metres individual medley.
At the Olympic Games Paris 2024, Merchand won gold medals in the 200 m medley, 200 metre breaststroke, 200 metre butterfly, and 400 metre medley.
According to Paris 2024: “Who better than Léon Marchand, the most successful athlete of the Paris 2024 Games with 4 gold medals, to retrieve the lantern containing the Olympic Flame to bring to the Stade de France?”
