According to the NOA:

History of Nigeria

In 1884, Britain occupied a geographical setting located on the West Coast of the North Atlantic Ocean. Between 1900 and 1903, this geographical setting was divided into three separate administrative blocks – Southern Protectorate, Northern Protectorate and Lagos Colony. While Calabar was the capital of Southern Protectorate, Zungeru in present day Niger State was the capital of Northern Protectorate. In May, 1906, the Lagos Colony was merged with the Southern Protectorate to ease the British financial burden.

Both the Northern and Southern protectorates were eventually amalgamated on January 1, 1914 and became a single entity known today as Nigeria with Lokoja, the current capital of Kogi State, as the administrative capital, and Sir Friedrick Lord Lugard as the first British Governor-General. The name ‘Nigeria’ was coined from the phrase, ‘Niger area,’ first suggested by a British journalist, Flora Shaw, in an article she published in London Times in 1897. Flora Shaw had married Lugard in 1902.

On October 1, 1954, Nigeria became a federation under the leadership of Oliver Littleton as the Governor-General following the adoption of 1954 Littleton Constitution, which divided Nigeria into three regions – North, East and West. The Constitution granted independence to each of the regions for self-rule.

Nigeria became independent on October 1, 1960, but still taking orders from the Queen of England until 1963 when it formally became a republic, freed from all colonial relics.
