Portugal midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, found the back of the net three (3) times to ensure Manchester United emerged from behind to discomfit new Premier League entrant, Ipswich Town, 5-2 in the top flight match at Old Trafford on Sunday 30 August, 2026.
It was United’s first victory of the new season.
The home side were stunned when the Tractor Boys went in front in the 29th minute through Leif Davis from an Abdul Fatawu assist. The goal made it look like it would be a difficult afternoon for Michael Carrick’s side.
But, the hosts pressured and netted the leveller in the 40th minute when Fernandes converted an assist from Matheus Cunha; and from there on, it was a show that had United take charge.
Cunha’s ball located the Portuguese midfielder, who slammed it with his left foot to restore parity
Manchester United then took the lead in the 56th minute when Jacob Greaves struck the back of his own net.
After scoring an own goal which made way for the Reds to go ahead, Greaves, English centre-back, once again slammed his side with another pain, this time the defender brought down Cunha when he was through on goal which resulted to a penalty.
Fernandes stepped forward and did not fail to convert from the penalty spot successfully in the 61st minite to make it 3-1 for the hosts; and in the 68th minute, the Portugal international completed his hat-trick and the fourth for United.
The Manchester United Captain was not done as he released the ball for Cameroonian forward, Bryan Mbeumo, who sealed the win with the fifth in the 82nd minute.
Ipsiwch Town did pull one back in the 1st minute of additional time after Julio Enciso’s assist was converted by substitute Chuba Akpom.
Marcus Rashford was in action for Manchester United as he returned to the team’s starting eleven; it was the first time the Englishman started for the Reds since 2024.
