Harry Kane has expressed his confidence that England will finish Group L as toppers, saying, his side are currently in a “great position”.
The Bayern Munich forward expressed his optimism of the future of the Three Lions in an interview following England’s goalless draw in their second Group game against Ghana on Tuesday.
The England Captain was not able to steer his side to victory against the Black Stars, describing Ghana as a “difficult team to break down”.
According to England Football official website, he said, England really wanted the victory in Boston, but, had to settle for a point with their West African opponents. Kane added, he was “just there waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way”, however, “couldn’t quite get over the ball”.
England will lock horns with Panama in their final Group L match on Saturday 27 June, 2026 at 22:00 (WAT) at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, and the former Tottenham Hotspur forward is hopeful Coach Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions will emerge victorious and “finish top”.
In his post-draw reaction, Kane said:
On the game against Ghana…
“It was one of those games. A difficult team to break down. I think we had loads of possession and probably the last 15 minutes of each half was when we were at our best.
“They started to tire towards the end. We had some chances; I obviously had a big chance there and Nico [O’Reilly] hit the bar too. It could have easily been a game where we came away with the win. In the end, we didn’t concede too many chances, just a couple of counterattacks in the whole game.
“We wanted the win but we’ll take the point and we’re still in a great position in the group.”
On his opportunity to score…
“You go through games like that. I was just there waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way, it was a game as a striker that you’re just waiting for the ball to bounce and it did, I just couldn’t quite get over the ball.
“I was kind of man marked there with [Thomas] Partey for a lot of the game, so I didn’t have the space to drop deep and arrive late. They also defended the box well. We had plenty of crosses but just couldn’t quite get the first contact. The balls through the middle were tough to play because it was so compact.”
On the game against Panama…
“We’re in a great position – we play Panama next. I spoke before about major tournaments, you chunk it up into two separate tournaments. First the group stage, making sure you make it through and hopefully we can finish with a win and finish top.”
Following his appearance for England in the clash against Ghana, Kane climbed to third on the All-time England Men’s Caps with 116.
Further post-draw reactions from fellow Three Lions:
Eberechi Eze: On his World Cup debut for England – the Arsenal player said: “It’s where I want to be, it’s what I want to be doing so massively grateful and hopeful there’s more.”
Jordan Pickford: “We need to be positive and recover for the next match and that’s what we’ll do.”
Declan Rice: “Stay positive and keep going. We still have a great chance to top the Group.”
Thomas Tuchel: “We had enough shots, we had enough crosses, we had enough set pieces to score the first goal.”
