New York Knicks win NBA championship for first time in more than 50 years

The New York Knicks have won the National Basketball Association championship for the first time in over fifty (50) years; the long-awaited triumph plunged the City and fans into wild celebrations.

The Knicks won the title against the San Antonio Spurs, 94-90, in the fifth game of the best-of-seven series, on Saturday 13 June, 2026

The clash took place in Texas, however, New Yorkers took to to their hometown streets in large numbers to watch and celebrate the huge feat for fans and the City.

Some fans took trips to Texas at the Frost Centre, home turf of the Spurs, where the two teams slugged it out.

In his congratulatory message to The Knicks on X, former President of the United States (US), Barack Obama, wrote: “Congrats to Coach Brown, Finals MVP Jalen Brunson, OG, and the rest of these incredible NBA Champion @NYKnicks! What a run!”

The NBA posted on X: “For the first time in 53 years, The Knicks are NBA Champions.

“New York defeats San Antonio 4-1 in the NBA Finals, capturing their third championship in franchise history!”

45th and 47th US President, Donald Trump, posted his congratulations on Truth Social to Jim Dolan, owner of New York Knicks, who invited him to game 3 of the series in New York.

President Trump wrote: “Congratulations to Jim Dolan and the New York Knicks!!! What a year it has been but, even more so, what incredible playoff wins we have all witnessed, especially the last four – Maybe the greatest in the history of basketball.”
