Forward, Kylian Mbappe, has emerged the leading goalscorer in the history of France after scoring twice in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I showdown against Senegal to hand the European side a 3-1 victory on Tuesday 16 June, 2026 at MetLife Stadium in New York City.
After a first half that recorded no goal, the Real Madrid forward opened the scoring for France in the 66th minute with a defence-dividing pass from Bayern Munich winger, Michael Olise.
Mbappe’s opener levelled the record of fifty-seven (57) goals attained by Olivier Giroud. The former Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG) player then added his second and third for the Les Parisiens in the 6th minute of additinal time to emerge the outright leading goalscorer for France with fifty-eighy (58) goals.
The forward sealed the victory for his country with a beautiful long range strike.
With his brace on Tuesday night against the Lions of Teranga, Mbappe now has a total of fourteen (14) World Cup goals so far, placing him level with Germany legend Gerd Muller in the all-time scoring charts.
He remains behind Brazil’s Ronaldo, who has fifteen (15) goals, and Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who has sixteen (16) goals.
France netted their second in the 82nd minute through PSG forward, Bradley Barcola, with an assist from AC Milan midfielder, Adrien Rabiot.
The Senegalese fought back and pulled one in the 5th minute of additional time after Iliman Ndiaye had provided for Ibrahim Mbaye, who plays as forward for PSG.
Earlier in the contest, Mbappe was denied a penalty following a challenge from Al Nassr forward, Sadio Mane, with referee Alireza Faghani standing his ground with his decision despite being sent to the monitor by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
France head coach, Didier Deschamps, featured a powerful attack against their African opponents that had Mbappe, Olise, and PSG duo, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue.
