No FIFA plans to replace Iran with Italy at World Cup

According to sources, there are no plans from FIFA to replace Iran with Italy at the World Cup 2026 this summer following the proposal of the switch by President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy.

There has been lingering doubts on the participation of Iran in the tournament.

Paolo Zampolli, Special Envoy of the United States (US), told Financial Times, “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup.

“I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”

FIFA did not make any statement in reaction to Zampolli’s proposal, however, highlighted a statement made by Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, last week.

Infantino said: “The Iranian team is coming, for sure.”.

Italy, who are World Cup winners a record four (4) times, were unable to secure a ticket to the World Cup 2026 following a qualification play-off defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina last month.

June 15 and 21, 2026, Iran will slug it out with New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles at the World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States (US), Canada and Mexico.

And, on June 26, 2026, the Iranians will face Egypt in Seattle. The tournament will kick off on June 11, 2026.

Under the rules of FIFA, the World governing body possesses “sole discretion” over what happens if a team withdraws or is excluded from the competition.

“Fifa may decide to replace the Participating Member Association in question with another association”, Article six of its World Cup regulations also says.

Last week in Washington DC, Infantino said: “Iran has to come if they are to represent their people. They have qualified, and they’re actually quite a good team as well. They really want to play, and they should play. Sports should be outside of politics.”

Previously, President Trump has said, that, Iran would be “welcome” at the World Cup.
