Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced, he has endorsed his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, to succeed him as Governor of the State.
The endorsement came on Monday 27 April, 2026 after Hamzat officially made known to the Governor his plan to vie for the seat of Governor of the Southwestern State.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed, he and Hamzat have worked closely for more than two (2) decades and has properly weighed his Deputy’s “strength and capabilities” and concluded he is “steadily” committed to Lagosians.
The Governor said, his Deputy was “nurtured” by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and that automatically makes him qualified for the job.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “We have worked closely for over 21 years and I know his strength, his capabilities and his steady commitment to the people of Lagos.
“Femi’s understanding of governance and the socio-economic development of the State as nurtured by our leader, HE President Bola Tinubu, makes him, undoubtedly the best man for the job.”
Sanwo-Olu said, Lagos State has become “too important” and cannot be used for “experiment”, adding, he believes in Hamzat’s “values” and that he will continue with the work to make Lagos State “greater”.
The Governor said: “Lagos is too important to be left for experimenting. I, therefore have no doubt that with his values, he will continue to work tirelessly to make our state greater.”
Expressing his appreciation to his boss following the endorsement, Hamzat said, the “trust” from his “brother” means “a great deal” to him, and, reaffirmed his commitment to continuing on the progress achieved together.
In his appreciation, Hamzat said: “Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend, HE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“His trust means a great deal to me. We’ve worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I don’t take this vote of confidence lightly.
“I remain committed to building on the progress we’ve made together, and look forward to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose.”
