US and Nigeria discuss ‘close coordination on countert*rrorism efforts’

The United States (US) and Nigeria have met to “deepen” their “enduring” partnership, as well as, reassert their “shared vision for a more secure and prosperous future”.

This is coming after Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received Mr Massad Boulos, Senior Adviser to United States President Donald Trump on Arab and African in Rome, Italy.

President Tinubu had travelled to Rome for the Aqaba Process Meeting, which seeks to promote shared strategies to address the root causes of instability, combining security, development, and governance.

The US Special Adviser posted on X: “It was an honor to meet with Nigerian President Tinubu to deepen the enduring U.S.-Nigeria partnership and reaffirm our shared vision for a more secure and prosperous future.

“Together, we’re working to expand our bilateral trade and develop a business climate that attracts U.S. investment, supports Nigeria’s long-term growth, and strengthens regional prosperity.”

The US official said, he alongside the Nigerian Leader talked about “close coordination on counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel” and other regions in Africa.

He added, America and Nigeria will not stop to partner to convert “shared commitments into lasting progress on peace”.

The US Special Adviser further posted: “We discussed close coordination on counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel, Lake Chad Basin, and Gulf of Guinea, underscoring our joint commitment to stability and security.

“Our conversation also highlighted Nigeria’s rich religious diversity, including its deep-rooted Christian community.

“The U.S. and Nigeria will continue working together to turn shared commitments into lasting progress on peace, security, and prosperity across the region.”

President Tinubu returned to Abuja after his participation in the Aqaba Process Meeting on Saturday 18 October, 2025.
