Police in Texas hunt convict ‘mistakenly’ released from jail

Texas Police are looking for a man they say was released “mistakenly” from jail as he was set to start a seven-year sentence.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office said, 36-year old Tory Dugas had been sentenced to five years in state prison for assaulting a family member and two years for evading arrest.

Dugas, instead, who had been in jail in Harris County since Thursday on other charges that were dismissed, was released on Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Office revealed, a “thorough investigation” is under way to ascertain the reason for his “erroneous release” from jail.

It seems that jail staff did not “properly document his state prison sentence in his file”, the office said in a statement. It led to the assumption that Dugas was eligible for release.

Police have urged the public to contact them if they see Dugas.
