A politician in Finland has died in the country’s main parliament building in Helsinki, the capital.
Local media reported, 30-year old Eemeli Peltonen, who was an MP for the Social Democratic Party, is believed to have taken his own life in the building and was found on Tuesday morning.
His unforseen demise has stunned Finland, with politicians on all sides expressing their grief.
Chair of the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group, Tytti Tuppurainen, said via a statement: “He was a much-loved member of our community and we will miss him deeply. A young life has ended far too early.”
Although Parliament is in summer recess, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, suspended all official political work for the remainder of the day.
YLE, public broadcaster, reports, Orpo held a minute of silence in honour of Peltonen who, he said, had been well liked by colleagues.
Police were called to the Eduskuntatalo – the parliamentary building on Tuesday. They said no foul play was suspected.
The death of Peltonen was confirmed about three hours later in a short parliamentary statement.
He represented the southern region of Uusimaa and was in his first term as a member of parliament, following his election in 2023.
