‘Deeply regrettable and must not be ignored’ – Peter Obi reacts to continuous protest by retired Police officers over poor pension scheme

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has bared his mind on the continuous protest by Police officers over “poor pension scheme”, saying, it is “deeply regrettable and must not be ignored”.

Obi said, these officers dedicated their lives to protecting the country “often at great personal risk”, adding, it is “demoralising and unjust” for them to be abandoned in retirement.

He called on the government to “urgently” install a “comprehensive and dignified” pension scheme so after service, officers can live in “comfort and honour”.

Obi reacted on X: “The continuous protest by retired members of the Nigeria Police Force over their poor pension scheme is deeply regrettable and must not be ignored. These are men and women who dedicated their lives to protecting our nation, often at great personal risk.

“At a time when Nigeria is grappling with significant security challenges, it is both demoralising and unjust for those who once served on the frontlines to be abandoned in retirement. How we treat our retired security personnel speaks volumes about how we value those currently serving.

“The government must urgently implement a comprehensive and dignified pension scheme that reflects the years of sacrifice of our retired officers and ensures they live in comfort and honour. Doing so is not only a moral obligation, but it is also a step toward boosting the morale and commitment of those still in active service.

“No nation achieves lasting peace and order without first respecting and caring for its protectors. We must show compassion and care for those who once protected our nations, so that we will not risk losing the trust and commitment of those still in uniform.”
