Tropical Storm Yagi: School and work suspended in parts of China

In parts of China, school and work were suspended on Thursday as Typhoon Yagi closed in on an island province with the potential to emerge as the strongest tropical storm to hit the area in a decade.

A No. 8 typhoon signal was raised by the Hong Kong Observatory, the third highest warning under the city’s weather system on Thursday evening.

It said, the huge typhoon, with maximum sustained winds of 210 kilometers per hour (130 miles per hour) would surround 300 kilometers (190 miles) southwest of the financial hub on Friday morning.

While the weather remained silent on Thursday morning, Kindergartens, special schools and evening classes were already canceled in the city; to ensure the safety of students, the Education Bureau made known the city’s schools would be suspended on Friday.

In the city, flights in dozens were also cancelled on Thursday and Friday, also, care centres for children and elderly residents were also closed.

Government-organized temporary shelters were open to people in need.
