Executive Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has sent his “hearty” congratulations to the Edo Queens on their Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) 2025/26 victory.
In a Statement on X on Sunday 14 June, 2026, the Governor described the victory as “outstanding”, saying, the “remarkable” girls showed “resilience and exceptional quality” all through the competition.
Okpebholo said, the victory has brought “honour and glory” to the South-South State.
The Statement reads: “I heartily congratulate our remarkable girls, @EdoQueensFC on their outstanding triumph as champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership 2025/26 season.
“The team displayed resilience, discipline, determination, and exceptional quality throughout the tournament, once again bringing honour and glory to Edo State.”
Edo Queens clinched the title after finishing goalless with Bayelsa Queens in their last showdown of the NWFL playoffs at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Sunday 14 June, 2026.
With ten (10) points amassed from five (5) matches, Edo Queens (based in Benin City) clinched the top spot of the Super Six standings.
The triumph handed Edo Queens its second title in three (3) seasons; they emerged Champions of the NWFL 2023/24.
Edo Queens have now successfully cemented their position as a huge force in the women football of Nigeria.
After an important 2-1 victory over Rivers Angels on Matchday four (4), Edo Queens needed just a draw to lift the trophy. They confronted the determination of Bayelsa Queen with “discipline”.
Governor Okpebholo further wrote: “Winning this prestigious title for the second time is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the consistency, excellence, and determination that define the Edo people.
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Edo State, I congratulate and celebrate the players, coaching crew, management, and supporters of Edo Queens for this remarkable achievement.
“This victory is not only a triumph for the club but also an inspiration to young girls across our state and beyond to dream big, work hard, and pursue excellence.
“Congratulations, Champions! Edo is proud of you.”
For winning the NWFL 2025/26, Edo Queens will represent Nigeria at the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers, where they will fight for a spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
