Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Executive Governor of Anambra State, has issued an order for the shut down of the Onitsha Main Market for seven (7) days as a result of the “protracted economic sabotage cloaked as “Monday sit-at-home””.
Soludo gave the order on Monday 26 January, 2026; he said, henceforth, any market that refuses to open on Monday will face the same sanction.
The Governor said, he is now out to ensure the protection of the “economic interets” of the Southeastern State, as well as, its people.
He added, no person or group has the right to “halt” the lives and livelihoods of people.
The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor pleaded with Anambrarians to ignore the ‘Monday sit-at-home’ and do their businesses as usual.
Governor Soludo said: “Today, I have ordered the shut down of the Onitsha Main Market for one week due to the protracted economic sabotage cloaked as “Monday sit-at-home”. Going forward, this order would apply to any other market in Anambra that shuts down on Monday.
“This action is not taken lightly, as I am determined to protect the economic interests of our state and its people. No individual or group has the right to halt the lives and livelihood of the people.
“I urge all traders and market stakeholders to disregard this call to economic sabotage and resume business as usual. Let us work together to build a prosperous Anambra.”
Soludo warned those “aiding and abetting” the ‘Monday sit-at-home’, which he described as “economic sabotage” should desist, and said, his government will no longer endure it.
He assured, his government will make sure the economy of Anambra State is protected, and called on residents to do their businesses without fear.
Governor Soludo further said: “To those who continue to aid and abet this economic sabotage, I warn that we will not tolerate it any further. Our government will take all necessary measures to ensure the security and safety of lives and property in the state.
“I call on all residents of Anambra to go about their normal business activities without fear. We will continue to do everything possible to protect our economy and ensure that our state remains a hub for business and investment.”
