‘Unacceptable’: ‘Applying tariffs on allies is completely wrong’ – Starmer and Macron to Trump on Greenland

Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), has responded after President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, announced tariffs on the UK, Denmark and other European countries over Greenland.

The UK PM said on X, Trump “applying” tariffs on its allies is “completely wrong'”.

For “refusing” to sell Greenland to America, President Trump made known, his administration will start collecting tariffs from the United Kingdom (UK), Denmark, France, Germany, The Netherlands, and other countries in the European Union (EU) a tariff of “10%” on goods sent to the US.

Starmer made his stand clear to Trump that, Greenland is “part” of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump said, America needs Greenland for its “national security”, as well as, the security of the world.

PM Starmer responded: “Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes.

“Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of NATO allies is completely wrong. We will of course be pursuing this directly with the US administration.”

Also, President of France, Emmanuel Macron, said, Trump’s tariffs on America’s allies are “unacceptable”.

On Greenland, the French President said, France and Europe will not be “influenced” by any “intimidation or threat” when faced with such “situations”.

Macron seriously warned, France and Europe will respond in a “united and coordinated manner” if Trump tariff threats are “confirmed”.

Via X, President Macron responded after Trump imposed a “10%” tariff on his country and other European countries, he said: “France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of nations, in Europe and elsewhere. This guides our choices. It underpins our commitment to the United Nations and to its Charter.

“It is on this basis that we decided to take part in the exercise organized by Denmark in Greenland. We fully assume this decision, because security in the Arctic and at the outer edges of our Europe is at stake.

“No intimidation or threat will influence us— in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world when we are confronted with such situations.

“Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. Europeans will respond in a united and coordinated manner should they be confirmed. We will ensure that European sovereignty is upheld.

“It is in this spirit that I will engage with our European partners.”

Trump has not ruled out using force to take Greenland, insisting the autonomous Island is needed for US security.

Greenland is scantily populated, but, rich in resources; it is located between North America and the Arctic, making it well positioned for early warning systems in the event of missile attacks and for monitoring vessels in the region.
