Queen Elizabeth II dies at 96: King Charles III and siblings to attend vigil around mother’s coffin

Queen Elizabeth II died last week at her Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96.

Her son, Charles, who has been Prince of Wales for more than 50 years has taken over the throne as King of the United Kingdom (UK) and 14 other Commonwealth realms while his son Prince William becomes the new Prince of Wales.

The new King is on a visit to Wales alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort, to round off his UK tour after visiting Scotland and Northern Ireland, the other nations that make up the United Kingdom.

Charles III will later on Friday, according to schedule link up with his siblings for a vigil, which is expected to last for few minutes, around the Queen’s coffin in Westminster Hall.

All Queen Elizabeth II’s grandchildren numbering eight will stand vigil beside her coffin on Saturday as it lies in state.

According to officials, King Charles III’s sons, Prince William and his brother Prince Harry will attend the vigil which is expected to last for 15 minutes.

Heir to the throne, Prince William, will stand at the head of the coffin while Prince Harry at the foot.

Both Princes who are military veterans will attend the vigil in uniform.

People in hundreds of thousands are expected to pay their last respects by filing past the coffin during the lying-in-state.

The lying-in-state which commenced on Wednesday is expected to be concluded on Monday, the day of the Queen’s burial.
