Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United: Lookman scores as Carrick’s Reds humiliated at Metropolitano

The poor run of Manchester City under English manager, Michael Carrick, continues as the Premier League side were downed by Atletico Madrid in Spain on Tuesday night.

Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman, was on target to seal the beautiful win for the Spanish La Liga side on home turf.

In the League Phase match of the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday 13 October, 2026, Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Metropolitano in Madrid City, with the visitors conceding in the first few seconds of the clash.

However, Carrick ensured to improve in the performance of the Reds by making five (5) changes to the staring lineup. The move still could not bring win to the 20-time Premier League winners as they have now recorded five (5) games without a win.

The home side went in front very early, in the 1st minute of play, with Alex Baena providing for Pablo Barrios, who outstandingly shot past under Ayden Heaven to hit the back of the net.

United were unable to find their way back into the contest after Barrios’ opener as Cameroon international, Bryan Mbeumo, wasted two (2) fine goal chances to restore parity to the game before the conclusion of the first 45 minuts, while, Marcus Rashford was unable to control a pass from Lisandro Martinez.

An effort from Captain Bruno Fernandes with a pass provided by Your Tielemans ended off target.

The Mattress Makers also had chances to increase their tally, however, Alejandro Grimaldo and Julian Alvarez failed to convert their chances.

The Reds’ remaining hope of a leveller vanished when defender, Leny Yoro, was shown a straight red card in the 74th minute. The France national team player was adjudged to have committed a serious foul on substitute Jonathan David following a check by Video Assistant Referee (VAR), and was sent off.

The game was decided in the 79th minute when Super Eagles and former Atalanta forward, Lookman, netted the second for Atletico Madrid to help the hosts finish with a clean sheet.

The outcome means Manchester United are the first English side to lose in the Uefa Champions League this season.

Via X, in its post-victory reaction, Atletico Madrid described its triumph over Manchester United as “special”.

Atletico Madrid posted: “A special win.”
