Sharpshooter, Erling Braut Haaland, netted a brace to help Norway clinch a 2-1 triumph over Brazil in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 on Sunday 5 July, 2026 at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, United States (US).
The outcome means the the Vikings are through to the quarter finals of the tournament, while, the five-time World Cup Winners are ousted.
Carlo Ancelotti’s Green-Yellow would have gone in front in the 14th minute of play, but, Newcastle United midfielder, Bruno Guimaraes, failed to convert from the penalty spot.
After a first half that ended goalless, Manchester City striker, Haaland, opened the scoring for Norway after converting Andreas Schjelderup’s cross in the 79th minute.
And, in the 90th minute, once again, Schjelderup provided for Haaland, who found the back of the net with a fine low drive from outside the box to seal a place for the European side in the last 8 of the tournament.
The Green-Yellow were awarded a second penalty after referee Ismail Elfath deemed Leo Ostigard to have elbowed Casemiro, and this time, it was Neymar, who fields for Brazilian side, Santos, that stepped forward and converted in the 10th minute of additional time to make it 1-2.
Neymar’s goal was just a consolation for Brazil as the South Americans are dumped out of the tournament in the Round of 16 for the first time since 1990.
In the game, which was entertaining, Norway’s Patrick Berg had the ball hit the back of the net very early, in the 4th minute, only for the celebrations to be abruptly shortened after Atletico Madrid striker, Alexander Sorloth, was ruled offside.
