The National Sports Commission (NSC) has celebrated midfielder, Alex Iwobi, after reaching 100 appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
On X, the Commission described Iwobi as a “committed and consistent” player.
The Fulham FC midfield maestro reached the milestone in the international friendly against Portugal on Wednesday 10 June, 2026.
Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, presented the former Arsenal midfielder a commemorative frame jersey ahead of the friendly in recognition of his 100th appearance for Nigeria.
Iwobi made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2015 and has been an essential member of the Nigeria team ever since.
In a tribute titled ‘Alex Iwobi – A Century of National Service’, the NSC wrote: “Before kick-off of Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal, in Lisbon Portugal, NSC Chairman @ShehuDikko presented a commemorative framed jersey to @alexiwobi in recognition of his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles.
“Alex Iwobi made his debut for Nigeria in 2015 and has been a key part of the @NGSuperEagles ever since. The @FulhamFC midfielder now joins an exclusive group of Nigerian football centurions.
“The National Sports Commission celebrates a player whose commitment, consistency and service to the nation have earned him a place among Nigeria’s football centurions.”
Portugal 2-1 Nigeria
Portugal, one of the FIFA World Cup 2026 favourites, emerged victorious over Nigeria by two (2) goals to one (1) in the final warm-up of the Lusitanians ahead of the global football event.
Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceição netted for Portugal in the 23rd and 75th minutes respectively, while, Akor Adams pulled one for Nigeria in the 37th minute.
The friendly took place at Estadio Dr Magalhaes Pessoa, in Leiria, Portugal on Wednesday 10 June, 2026.
Portugal are drawn alongside Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K of the World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States (US), Canada and Mexico.
The Lusitanians will kick off their World Cup 2026 campaign with a preliminary against DR Congo on Wednesday 17 June, 2026 at 18:00 (WAT) at Houston Stadium in Houston, US.
The Super Eagles were ousted from the World Cup 2026 qualification process in their continental playoff final against DRC.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off today, Thursday 11 June, 2026 with a match between host nation, Mexico, and South Africa at 20:00 (WAT).
