Kieran McKenna steps down as Ipswich Town manager after Premier League promotion

Kieran McKenna has resigned as head coach of Ipswich Town, just few weeks after helping the Club gain promotion to the Premier League.

Born in London, England and raised in Northern Ireland, McKenna is exiting the Portman Road after five (5) season (from 2021 to 2026).

Via a statement, Ipswich Town announced: “Kieran McKenna will step down as Ipswich Town Manager after five seasons at the club.”

The pro football manager explained, he is stepping away from football management to give more time to his family.

The 40-year old took control of the Tractor Boys in 2021 and helped them to three (3) promotions in the past four (4) seasons, two (2) of which has elevated the Club to the English top tier football system.

Ipswich Town will contest in the Premier League in the 2026/27 season after finishing second in the Championship 2025/26, behind Frank Lampard’s Coventry City.

After forty-six (46) showdowns, Ipswich Town concluded the Championship with eighty-four (84) points, eleven (11) points behind Coventry City.

Ipswich Town announced: “Kieran has made the decision to step away from football management and dedicate time to his family, having been at the forefront of one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

“Kieran’s fierce dedication and unmatched work ethic represents all the club stands for and he departs with the best wishes and gratitude of all at Ipswich Town for a contribution that has created memories which will last a lifetime.”

According to the statement, McKenna said: “It is with a mixture of gratitude, pride, sadness and contentment that I have decided to step down from the honour of managing this historic football club.

“To manage this club has been an absolute privilege. Over the last five seasons we have been on an incredible journey that has brought so many of the best experiences in my professional and personal life.

“After giving so much to the role over the previous five seasons, I now look forward to taking a break from management and dedicating some time to my family, who have been with me every step of my career so far.”

Mark Ashton, Ipswich Town Chairman, said: “The job Kieran has done at this football club over the last five years is simply incredible.

“Kieran will be greatly missed but he and his family leave us with our immense gratitude for all he has done. He will always be welcome at Portman Road.

“Thank you for everything, Kieran. It’s been an absolute pleasure.”
