Hope Uzodimma, Executive Governor of Imo State, has called for a review of the curricular of Polytechnics and Universities of Technology to make sure they “align” with the “emerging” global order driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Governor said on X: “There is a need for a review of the curricula of polytechnics and universities of technology to ensure they are aligned with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the emerging global order driven by Artificial Intelligence.”
Uzodimma made the statement when he hosted a delegation of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), led by Comrade Chibuzor Asomugha. The delegation paid him a courtesy visit after the recent workshop in the Southeastern State by the Union.
He urged members of the Union to prioritize research in the area of AI, as well as, other emerging technologies. The research will help bridge the technological rift caused by “obsolete” curricular that are no longer effective to challenges and unfolding “needs” of Industry.
Uzodimma said: “While commending members of the union for their commitment to national development and academic excellence, I encouraged them to prioritize research in the field of Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies.
“Such efforts, I noted, are critical to bridging the technological gap created by obsolete curricula that no longer adequately respond to contemporary challenges and the evolving needs of industry.”
The Governor also spoke against all kinds of discrimination against certificates issued by Polytechnics, saying, they were established to provide the “technical and practical training” needed to meet the technological needs of the country.
Uzodimma said: “I also used the opportunity to discourage all forms of discrimination against polytechnic certificates. Polytechnics were established specifically to provide the technical and practical training required to meet the nation’s technological needs.”
