Dua Lipa sues Samsung for $15 million for allegedly using her image to sell TVs

English singer, Dua Lipa, has filed a lawsuit against South Korean Multinational Conglomerate, Samsung, accusing the tech giant of using her image without authorisation to market its television sets.

The songwriter is seeking at least $15 million in damages.

The lawsuit is alleging that Samsung, a Company known worldwide for its top-tier Electronics division, featured a copyrighted image of the London-born pop star on the front of cardboard boxes that contain televisions for retail sale, this helped the Company to reap benefits from what appeared to be her endorsement of the product.

The image that is alleged to have been used by the Company on the television boxes is tagged ‘Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024’; and the lawsuit said, Lipa is the owner of all rights, title and interest in the image.

The suit was filed in the California Federal Court on Friday.

A Samsung Electronics Spox refused to comment on the issue, saying, it was unable to comment on pending litigation, whilst, lawyers of Dual Lipa did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.

Copyright and trademark violation aside, the singer has accused Samsung Electronics of breaching publicity rights.

Lawyers of the 30-year old Disco artist have attached screengrabs of postings on social media and comments in the filing with claims that the pop star’s image on the front of the boxes pushed potential customers to purchase the product.

Dua Lipa became aware of Samsung’s alleged breach in June last year and demanded that the Company stop using her image, however, Samsung headquartered in Samsung Town office complex in Seoul, repeatedly refused to do so, her lawyers said.
