Burnley 0-1 Manchester City: Haaland’s goal send Cityzens to top of Premier League, Clarets relegated

Manchester City have taken the top spot of the Premier League 2025/26 table after a lone goal victory over Burnley in the top flight match at Turf Moor on Wednesday 22 April, 2026.

It was not all that entertaining, but, a goal by Norway striker, Erling Haaland, very early in the game was all Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens needed to move to the summit of standings.

The outcome means Arsenal, title rivals, are now pushed down to second on the table and Burnely relegated back to second tier, Championship.

Guardiola’s City now stay ahead of Arsenal on goals netted; the Blues headed into the game after a 2-1 win over Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal on Sunday to amass their title chase momentum.

The visitors netted the only goal of the game through Haaland, who converted Jeremy Doku’s assist, in the 5th minute; the Norwegian went ahead to hit the woodwork late in the game.

Towards the end of the match, Nico O’Reilly failed to convert City’s best chance maybe; the English left-back failed to net from close range as the away side’s intensity lowered.

The result means, for the first time since the first week of of the 2025/26 season, Manchester City have returned to the top of standings as Arsenal continue to follow the path they followed for the past three (3) seasons – losing it all at the edge of glory.

Manchester City are now positioned to emerge new Kings of England with five (5) games left to play.

On the other side, the result means Burnley have now been confirmed to return to the Championship after winning just one (1) out of their last twenty-five (25) games.

Burnley will join Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have also bagged relegation to the English second tier football.

What next for Manchester City?

Manchester City will now shift focus to the FA Cup 2025/26 semi final where they will slug it out with Championship side, Southampton, in the semi finals at Wembley Stadium.

The Saints knocked out Arsenal in the quarter finals to reach the last four stage of the tournament, while, Manchester City cruised past Liverpool 4-0.
