Nigeria’s World Cup hopes dashed after 3-4 loss on penalties to Congo

DR Congo came from the back to down Nigeria 4-3 in a penalty shootout in the African playoffs final for the FIFA World Cup 2026, to clinch a spot in the intercontinental playoffs in March.

Frank Onyeka put the Super Eagles of Nigeria 1-0 in front in the 3rd minute at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, but, DR Congo hustled back and M. Elia scored a leveller for the Panthers of Congo in the 32nd minute.

In the second 45 minutes, Nigeria looked clueless after Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, was forced out of action with injury at half-time, and it was mostly DR Congo mounting pressure for the winner.

The Congolese found the net twice, only for the efforts to be struck out, and the game went to penalties.

Timothy Fayulu, Congolese substitute goalkeeper, brought on seconds before the shootout, saved two penalties.

Chancel Mbemba, Captain of DRC, making his 101st international appearance, came forward to convert the winning penalty to ignite huge celebrations among the DRC players and fans.

DR Congo will now play in a mini-tournament held in Mexico in March alongside five other teams; only two World Cup places are up for grabs.
