‘Not what a major country should do’ – China responds after US withdraws from UNESCO

The People’s Republic of China has reacted after the United States (US) pulled out from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The decision by the United States (US) is coming some months after President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order pulling America out of the World Health Organization (WTO) just some hours after taking over the White House on 20 January, 2025.

China, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spox, Lin Jian, said, this is the “third US withdrawal from #UNESCO”, adding, “this is not what a major country should do”.

The United Nations organization that promotes cooperation in education, science, culture and communication to foster peace across the world alongside many countries expressed “regret” following the decision by the US.

China made known, it will continue to “firmly” support UNESCO’s work.

America’s withdrawal from UNESCO will take effect from December 2026.

Chinese MFA Spox, Lin Jian, posted on X: “We note that UNESCO and multiple countries have expressed regret over the US’s decision to withdraw from the organization again. It is the third US withdrawal from #UNESCO, and the country has long been in arrears. This is not what a major country should do.

“China firmly supports UNESCO’s work. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN, we call on all countries to reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism and take concrete action to support the UN-centered international system.”
