Continuous rainfall cause flooding in Biseñi, Bayelsa State |
Homes, farmlands, fish farms, and poultry facilities have been damaged by the flood in affected communities including Akudonu, Egbebiri, Kilama, Tuburu, and Oturu-Ama.
“Farmers are forced to harvest crops prematurely, and residents are relocating to higher ground, where they urgently need tents, food, water, and sanitation facilities”, NEMA reports.
According to NEMA: “The continuous rainfall since October 17 in parts of the South-South Zone has caused flooding in Biseñi, Bayelsa State, due to rising water levels in the Orachi River, the Niger River, and their tributaries. A joint assessment was conducted by NEMA, the Bayelsa State emergency agency, community leaders, media representatives, and the governor’s special assistant.
The flood has affected several communities, including Akudonu, Egbebiri, Kilama, Tuburu, and Oturu-Ama, damaging homes, farmlands, fish farms, and poultry facilities. Farmers are forced to harvest crops prematurely, and residents are relocating to higher ground, where they urgently need tents, food, water, and sanitation facilities.
The floodwaters are polluted, and further rainfall could worsen the situation, necessitating immediate intervention from NEMA and the state government to mitigate the impact and assist the displaced communities.”
