Surprisingly, 27-year old Phillips was left out of the City squad that defeated Liverpool 3-2 in the Carabao Cup match on Thursday 22 December.

Guardiola answered when asked about Kalvin Phillips’ absence from the Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool, “he is not injured. He arrived overweight.”

About the reason why Phillips arrived “overweight” to training, Guardiola answered, “I don’t know.

“He didn’t arrive in the condition for the training sessions and to play.”

Following his recovery from a shoulder injury, Phillips featured twice for England at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, coming on as a substitute in the Three Lions’ encounters against Wales and Senegal.

Guardiola further said, “When he will be ready, he will play. We need him. We need him a lot.”
