Amazon, which employs 1.5 million people across the globe, did not mention which countries the job cut will affect, however, disclosed that Europe will be included.
A huge part of the job losses will come from its consumer retail business and its division of human resources.
“Uncertain economy” – the reason for the job cut, according to Boss Andy Jassy, saying it had “hired rapidly over several years.”
In a memo to staff, Jassy said, “We don’t take these decisions lightly or underestimate how much they might affect the lives of those who are impacted.
“Companies that last a long time go through different phases. They’re not in heavy people expansion mode every year.”
Employees of Amazon affected by the cuts are expected to be told on 18 January.
